Ivan Kavaleridze
Ukrainian Soviet sculptor, director of cinema and theater, playwright, scriptwriter. Lived in Kyiv.
Was born on April 1st (April 13th), 1887 in the hamlet Ladansky, Poltava Governorate, Russian Empire; died on December 3, 1978 in Kyiv, Ukrainian SSR.
Life
Ivan Petrovych Kavaleridze was born in Ladansky (Ладанский; today's Novopetrivka (Новопетрівка)) in the Romny district of the Ukrainian Sumy Region. After attending primary school in today's village Stara Talalajiwka and three years teaching at a district school, his uncle, an artist and archeologist at the Scythian department of the Kyiv Archaeological Museum brought him to Kyiv in 1899. From 1907 to 1909 he was studying at the Kyiv Art School. From 1909 to 1910 he was an art student at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. In the years 1910/1911 he developed his artistic skills at the private studio of Naum Aronson in Paris.
He began his film career in 1911. Between 1928 and 1933 he was working as an artist, writer and director on the film studios of Odessa; between 1934 and 1941 in Kyiv. From 1957 to 1962 he was a director on the Dovzhenko film studio in Kyiv.
After the October Revolution, he was actively involved in the implementation of Lenin's plan of monumental propaganda and created numerous monuments.
Kavaleridze died in Kyiv at the age of 91 and was buried there on the Baykowe Cemetery.
